Are you searching for free book writing software for beginners or are you looking for free writing software or online writing tools for students? I am always on the lookout for cool new things to try, so I decided to compile this list of free book writing software. It is pretty long, but it is certainly worth it!
Free writing software can come in handy for anyone, but especially for the student or the budding writer. There are numerous free online tools that can be helpful if you are typing an essay or even just starting out. For the busy student, free writing help is essential to help get them started on their paper. If you are still an amateur writer, this article will guide you through some great easy-to-use tools
Grammar Lookup:
Grammar Lookup is another good choice for an online grammar checking app.
I used 3,000 words from one of my book manuscripts to test the app.
It started checking for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors almost immediately. It is a good app for checking short-form writing, such as blog posts and short stories.
If you’re looking for a robust grammar app with a generous word limit, this one is well worth trying.
Again, like a lot of online writing tools, it is ad-supported.
If you don’t want to use the limited free plan Grammarly extension to check your writing, you have a choice.
Grammar Lookup does an excellent job of checking all your grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
What I like about this app is that there doesn’t seem to be a word limit. I pasted in over 3,000 words, and it checked everything very accurately.
You can also choose between British and US English.
Hemingway Editor:
Without a doubt, the Hemingway app is one of the best free online writing tools and should be your first choice.
The Hemingway Editor evaluates a piece of writing for clarity and simplicity. It calculates readability and highlights adverbs, passive voice, and dull, complicated words. This is an excellent web application for learning how to write effectively. Check out Hemingway Editor here.
It is not a grammar checker, but it does three things exceptionally well.
Once you paste in your text, the app will check it for passive voice use, unnecessary adverbs, and hard-to-read sentences.
These are three vital areas of your sentence structure. It is where you can improve the clarity and ease of reading in your writing.

ProWritingAid:
Prowritingaid is one of my favorite writing checkers. I use it every single day of the week.
You can use the free version of ProWritingAid.
It offers you a lot of functionality to help you write more accurately online using a simple Chrome extension to check your grammar and spelling.
Are you an author? Then you should consider all the editing and checking tools that are available with this app.
It is a superb writing aid for authors and writers of long-form content articles.
There are over twenty different writing analysis tools and reports in the premium version. These will give you a huge range of suggestions to improve your writing.
There are also easy to use extensions available for Chrome, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Scrivener too.
It is my number one go-to editing tool when I need to work intensively on very long documents such as long-form articles or book manuscripts.

Ginger:
Ginger Grammar is another very popular grammar checker.
There is a free Chrome extension, and it works similarly to most of the other popular online checkers.
There is also a sentence rephraser and vocabulary enhancement tools.
But where Ginger shines is in its ability to find and fix incorrectly spelled (or spelt) words depending on the context.

Slick Write:
Slick Write is a worthy grammar and writing checker.
It is similar to the Hemingway app, but it takes text analysis much deeper.
You can check for sentences starting with the same word, misplaced conjunctions, and long sentences.
The settings page lets you include over thirty different analysis terms.
There is a limit of 200,000 characters, which is approximately 30,000 words. But this should be ample for most writers.
However, I noticed it works a little slowly for longs texts. It is better to work with smaller chunks of less than 5,000 words.
One big plus is that you can save your work.
Although it carries advertising, the ads are not intrusive.

Cliche Finder:
In his six rules for writing, George Orwell advised, “Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.” The Cliche Finder highlights cliches in your text so you can avoid overused expressions in your writing. Check out Cliche Finder here.
LibreOffice Writer:
LibreOffice is a free, open source alternative to Microsoft Office, and that means its word processing app, Writer, has many of the power features of Word without the accompanying price tag.
It’s a great choice for writers, with a full set of editing tools, a thesaurus, dictionaries for pretty much any language you can think of, and an active community in the support forums ready to help with any questions you might have.
It’s available for Windows, macOS and Linux, and receives regular updates with new features and bug fixes.
The only real drawback compared to Word is the lack of direct cloud support, although you can easily use this free writing software together with a service like Dropbox, and the absence of a mobile app for working on the move. If you’re happy to stick with the desktop then this could be the only word processor you need.

While the app is exclusive to macOS, it makes up for this in its fantastic design language and ease of use for anyone. It features a great way of mind-mapping, where you can join up certain key words in less than five clicks, and even add definitions to easily relate back to a certain section of a report or novel.
There’s even a feature that can benefit students hugely where an automatic Glossary can be created, full with endnotes & references, alongside correctly formatted Citations that can fit a certain University/College standard.
Above all, this is freely available on macOS High Sierra and above, with the app’s creator, Frode Alexander Hegland and his team, always listening and responding to feedback in regards to requested features or bug fixes. There is an in-app purchase for exporting, however everything else in the app is free to use.
Author is an app that shouldn’t be missed on macOS, especially if you’re about to start the new school year with upcoming assignments, wherever that may be.

WriteMonkey:
We’re big fans of Markdown, the text-editing language that enables you to format, annotate, classify and link as you type with the minimum of fuss, and the superb WriteMonkey makes good use of it.
This free writing software delivers an incredibly stripped-down user interface that’s considerably more powerful than it looks. There’s an excellent outliner, automatic syntax highlighting and file organisation, and although markdown takes a bit of getting used to, you’ll be very glad you made the effort.
Once you’ve mastered WriteMonkey, you can use it to create blog posts, print publications and anything else that needs words in it.
