Looking for a great Free Coding Software? I know how frustrating it can be to learn a new programming language and not have the right tools to do so.

That’s why I have created a list of my personal favorites for beginners, intermediate and even advanced coders.

1. Notepad++

Notepad++ is a free and open source code editor for Windows. It is easy to use for beginners and highly powerful for advanced users. It comes with syntax highlighting for many languages including PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. It also comes with a built-in FTP plugin that allows you to connect to your server and edit files directly without leaving the editor.

Notepad++ is a free source code editor and Notepad replacement that supports several languages. Running in the MS Windows environment, its use is governed by GPL License.

While it is written for use with the GNOME desktop environment in mind it does not specifically require you to be running it, just have the libraries installed.

EmEditor (Windows) (FREE Trial; €32.15)

EmEditor is a lightweight, but extensible, commercial text editor for Microsoft Windows. Although designed for Windows XP, the program is also certified for use with Windows Vista. Available editions of the program include the 32-bit edition and the 64-bit edition, and the program also includes a portability option to set up a removable drive, such as a USB drive, through an Import and Export Wizard.

Feature-wise, the program includes unicode and large file support, a tabbed window design, and is extensible via plugins and scripts (macros), many of which have been written by the users.

Programmer’s Notepad (Windows)

Programmer’s Notepad is an open-source text editor targeted at users who work with source code.

TextWrangler came out of the popular BBEdit text editor. This powerful and feature rich text editor is a freeware. It has advanced search and replace tools, and it can directly edit and save files to FTP, SFTP servers. It offers syntax highlighting for many programing languages, fully supports utf-8, and even allows you to convert character encoding of text documents.

Coda

Coda is perhaps one of the most loved web development and programming editor for Mac. It is famous for its ridiculously good looking interface, and smart powerful features. It allows you to edit local or remote files, manage projects, work on multiple files at once with easy switching between tabs. It has built in terminal, debugger, web kit preview and inspector, and so many awesome features.

Coda is a $99 commercial web development application for Mac OS X, developed by Panic.
