Studies show that remote online teaching is the future. In fact, many believe it already is the present. And, those who are doing it today seem to be some of the most satisfied educators out there – both by their own anecdotes and by objective data collected by a variety of independent sources.
Remote online teaching tools are becoming more and more popular. Given the amount of time teachers put into preparing their lessons each day, the idea of designing lessons in a remote environment can be highly appealing. Not to mention that it supports motivation and time management.
Types of distance learning tools
Not all remote teaching tools are the same, and that’s a good thing! Each one has its own unique quality to enhance learning. Some tools handle communication better than others, while games are great for increasing students’ understanding of specific subjects. Each tool helps make learning easy and fun.
There are four main types of online learning platforms:
- Communication tools — There are several tools at teachers’ disposal, including email, discussion boards, chats, classroom websites and video conferencing. Many learning platforms include most of these features, such as Zoom and Google Classroom.
- Learning management systems (LMS) — LMS are software application programs designed to produce functional and interesting online classes. Create, manage and deliver course content while tracking students’ performance. LMS are a cost-effective and consistent way to teach students regardless of class size.
- Digital learning games — Kids love playing games, so why not give them educational ones to support their love for learning? National Geographic Kids offers fun science, geography, and adventure quizzes and games to entertain and inform kids. If you want your students to read books online and play educational games, Funbrain has countless goodies for them to enjoy. Are your students struggling with math? Help them boost their math knowledge with Prodigy Math Game and unlock hours of math learning enjoyment!
- Online learning resources — When the pandemic forced students to stay home, teachers began using various online resources to keep kids engaged and focused. Some of these tools include online lessons and activities, such as Sesame Street and PBS Kids.
Large monitor
This is my number one item by a mile when it comes to virtual teaching. You have to have some decent screen real estate in order to use all the great learning tools available to you easily. I know some people prefer having dual monitors, but as many laptops don’t have the ability to support two screens without major adaptors, I would say find a large scale monitor that can plug into your laptop to either mirror the screen or extend it. This will allow you to have your students on a grid view while sharing part of your screen with them as well. As you’ll see in the example below, it’s almost impossible to do all of this while on a 11″ screen. Here are four different monitors that aren’t going to break the bank but will help you optimize screen real estate: (Note: Make sure the monitor will work with your laptop before purchasing)
LG UltraWide 29″ – Sam’s Club – $189
Samsung 32″ Curved – Walmart – $199
LG 32″ Class FHD – Costco – $179
AOC 32″ Curved frameless – Amazon – $199
Screen share a window instead of full-screen
If you have a larger screen, you’ll want to put it to good use. Whenever I’m in a Zoom or Meet session, I use either Keynote or Google Slides to present as both tools come with built-in “play slideshow in window” settings versus presenting in full screen. Why is that important? Once you present in full screen, it becomes harder to manage the video call controls and any other items you might want to push out. Here’s a look at my screen during a recent virtual training:
As you can see, there’s a lot going on here. Not only am I sharing my slides, but behind the scenes I’m doing a few other things to keep the students engaged like pushing out polls or brainstorming walls. I even have some little virtual “sticky notes” as reminders for myself that the students can’t see. Whenever I’m in this view on Zoom, I just click “New Share” to toggle between windows easily and not having to turn off screen share.
Interactive presentation tool
Sharing your screen is the first step, but there will be times when you’ll want your students to interact with you in some ways. You can drop links to various tools in the video chat or LMS of choice, but to cut down on transition times, you can keep students in the same place with you by using an interactive presentation tool like Nearpod or Pear Deck. I use these tools with almost all of my remote presentations now as it keeps the virtual attendees following along with me. I can continue to screen share my slides while also moving them along in another window. This can be challenging for students with a small device as they might not be able to have 2 windows open at once. In those instances, I have the students minimize the Zoom window so they can hear my voice and follow along. Because you can embed links in the Nearpod, I push out polls, Padlet walls, and even virtual bingo cards with little to no disruption or time spent on transition.
FlipHTML5
FlipHTML5 is a remote teaching tool that allows teachers to use the tools provided to create textbooks and other study materials that can help students learn online especially during this coronavirus period.
As a matter of fact, without much sugar coating, FlipHTML5 Software is the perfect tool for a “flipped classroom”, as teachers can assign lessons from the site and follow up with the small group and hands-on activities in class. Many of the lessons are appropriate for remediating students who are struggling with grade-level material, as sometimes a student just needs to see the concepts in a new way in order to grasp them better.
FlipHTML5 can be used on any device so that teachers can connect with students, advances joint effort anytime, anywhere. This compelling instrument uses the capacities of one environment and offers both instructor and students paced learning.
In addition, Teachers can utilize FlipHTML5 to digitize their records and speak with their students better. Students will get refreshed flipbooks that are all around represented, modified, and disentangled to make learning and understanding ideas simple for them. By utilizing direct connections, teachers can consistently share learning materials and trade criticism with their students. This will likewise urge distributed sharing among students.
Flipgrid
I consider Flipgrid the academic Snapchat of the world that I have found refreshing and that students have fallen in love with. Flipgrid is a remote teaching tool that allows teachers to create “grids” to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is like a message board where teachers can pose questions, called “topics,” and their students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
However, its video responses encourage students to plan their responses and speak thoughtfully.
A simple way for students and teachers to create online discussion, as long as your classroom culture is mature enough to use it wisely. These short clasps can go from week after week perusing reflections to little introductions and friends can gain from one another’s recordings and give criticism all on the Flipgrid stage.
Loom
As part of Loom’s response to the directives of social distancing, the product is now free for teachers and students who are using Loom for remote teaching.
Loom’s free screencasting remote teaching tool is equipped with many benefits, the Pro version is free for teachers and students; It’s easy to use and intuitive. Almost no learning curve! On the off chance that you’ve at any point needed to record your screen and comment on your account perceptibly, instead of composing a long email, Loom is for you. With Loom, catch your screen, voice, and face in one spot, recording your screen or a particular application and including any essential discourse. Trim your recordings and add call-to-activities to provoke your understudies to catch up with extra material if necessary. Your recordings will be secret phrase ensured or may require a school email address for security purposes.
Google Classroom
Created for teaching and learning, Google Classroom is an all-in-one tool that makes learning flexible and accessible from anywhere in the world. Teachers save time when creating lesson plans, tracking student performance and using several creative tools to make course material more exciting.
Currently, there is a free version of Google Classroom. However, a paid version is on its way with add-ons and easy integration with other educational tools.

Pear Deck
Pear Deck is a Google Slides add-on that helps teachers create engaging slides and support student interaction. Teachers can create presentations from scratch or add interactive questions to existing presentations.
Pear Deck has amazing features including a dashboard that’s available on a phone or tablet, the ability to show or hide student responses, features that let you send personalized notes to individual students and fun audio files to add to presentations.
High Quality Microphone
I’m listing microphone before camera for a reason. Having high quality audio is so much more important than having a high quality video (not to mention the bandwidth pull on your internet). I know your laptop or headphones might have a microphone already, but spending a little bit on a better quality mic will help you not only with your synchronous video classes, but will help you sound great while recording asynchronous audio instructions. Microphones range wildly in price and you do get what you pay for. Here are a few including the top one which I own:
Blue Yeti USB Mic – Walmart – $114
Rode NT-USB Studio Quality – Amazon – $179
ATR2100x-USB – B&H Photo – $99
How to monitor student performance effectively in distance learning
When students are learning online, it can be tricky to find meaningful ways to oversee student progress. The good news is that most online software tools allow teachers to track and measure student responses.
Here are three constructive ways to assess and supervise student performance:
- Keep the lines of communication open. Unlike traditional school settings where students can talk with teachers in person, online contact is necessary to keep kids motivated to hand in assignments on time and stay on track. As well, holding daily office hours with email, phone and chat capabilities can help prevent kids from falling behind in their studies.
- Curriculum-based testing. Teachers may find curriculum-based testing is a good way to ensure students can apply what they’ve learned. Frequent evaluations help teachers determine where students struggle with lessons and make plans for addressing unfinished learning. Formative assessments such as quizzes, short evaluations, and conversations with students can help them correct mistakes.
- Set up learning targets. Learning targets help students to reach specific goals in each lesson. For instance, if a student struggles with subject-verb agreement, teachers may consider breaking down lessons into smaller targets to make it easier for the student to to apply proper grammar to their writing.
Conclusion
