How to Get Rid of Watermarks in GIMP
The easiest but slowest way to get rid of watermarks using GIMP is with the Clone Tool. To get started, open GIMP and select the Clone Tool.
This tool works similarly to Photoshop’s Clone Stamp Tool—you need to sample a part of the image. This time, hold down Ctrl/Cmd, then click on the part of the watermark you want to remove. It’s time-consuming but allows you to be incredibly precise.
However, you can do this all much faster when downloading and installing the GIMP Resynthesizer plugin. This awesome GIMP plugin offers a wealth of image editing options, most notably a version of Photoshop’s Content-Aware tool.
To install it, extract the files in the ZIP file, and copy all of them into GIMP’s plugin folder. From there, select the Free Select Tool or the Rectangle Select Tool.
Draw around the watermark to be removed.
Once it’s highlighted, go to Filters > Enhance > Heal selection. Set the Context sampling width.
As usual, you may need to play around with this figure to make sure you’re only losing the watermark, not too much of the image beyond that. Click OK and let the Resynthesize plugin work its magic.
Once complete (it can take a minute), use the Clone Tool to sample and cover any remaining blots.

The quick and simple method
You can very easily heal an image stamped with watermark in GIMP. Bear in mind though that in case of the semi-transparent watermarks it is not a precise restoration of the image mathematically to its former self, indeed it is sooner “healing” of the image, as parts of it are filled with newly generated content to make it blend with the rest of the picture. Still this method is good enough for most of the everyday situations and more often than not produces really good results.
You need the Resynthesizer Gimp plug-in to do this (available also for Windows).
Install the plug-in by:
sudo apt-get install gimp-resynthesizer
Then:
- open the picture with GIMP
- select the area you want to heal (the more precise the better)
- select Filters > Map > Resynthesizer
- click Ok
2. The more complicated methodThis way is manual labor intensive and may not always work.In case of a semi-transparent uniformly white watermark on either color or grayscale image:
- Create exact replica of the watermark as semi-transparent white on solid back
- Invert colors
- Place this image as a layer above the image you want to remove the watermark from
- In the “Layers” window set the mode of the top layer to “Burn”
You can read more about it here . Still, I have not got it to work in the real life, although it works perfectly as described with the sample images provided.
