What Are Epub Readers

These are file reading software that enables the reading of files usually stored in the epub format, hence the name. Google Books and Apple Books are prominent examples of epub readers as they widely employ the format to display books in their library.

No matter what the genre of the book is, whether it is a classic piece of literature, or an important academic work, the epub readers mentioned here possess the ability to host them all and make them available in formats that are both legible and ingenious.

Kindle for PC

The best free ebook reader, whether you use Amazon or not

+Compatible with all ebook formats+Automatic syncing+Cross-platform

Amazon’s official Kindle app for Windows (as well as Mac and mobile devices) is smart and stylish, and although it tempts you with reading suggestions from the Kindle store, the sales pitch isn’t too in-your-face.

There’s no setup necessary if you already have an Amazon account. Just log in with your usual username and password and your virtual shelves will be populated automatically (though you’ll have to click a book’s cover to download it, so bear this in mind if you’re planning some offline reading). Notes and bookmarks are synced across devices automatically, as are flashcards – an extremely useful addition for students using digital textbooks for revision.

Kindle for Windows also includes text-to-speech function, and changing font sizes and color schemes is as simple as clicking or tapping a button.

An open source ebook reader that’s a great choice for students

+Choice of reading modes+Metadata can be edited manually

-Can’t read protected Kindle ebooksAdvertisement

Calibre is an open source ebook reader and manager that’s lightweight and lightning-fast. Unlike many free ebook readers, Calibre supports Amazon’s AWZ format (though it won’t open DRM-protected files) as well as all the other popular ebook file types, and if any metadata is missing (such as genre or cover art), you can add it yourself using the bookshelf’s options menu.

One of Calibre’s best features is Reference Mode, which displays the current chapter and paragraph number in the top left – ideal if you need to cite references in an essay. We also like Flow Mode, where text is shown as a continuous scrolling stream without page breaks; not as pleasant as simulated page-turning for recreational reading, but a handy time-saver to avoid flicking backwards and forwards through a textbook.

Amazon Kindle (Windows, macOS)

It’s not the most obscure suggestion, but the official Kindle ebook reader app is a continuation of the hardware device, so that Kindle books can be read across multiple platforms. A big part of the Kindle app’s appeal is that you can bring up your notes, view your libraries, and continue reading between multiple devices.

The Amazon Kindle app.

The Kindle is the trendsetter and driving force behind modern ebook reading. As such, you are able to customize the layout in terms of backgrounds, font types, and accessibility options. You can also access your Kindle library through the browser.

Sumatra (Windows)

Sumatra is a popular, free, lightweight, and portable PDF and ebook reader for Windows 10. While it may not be cross platform, Sumatra has a a few other aces up its sleeve.

For example, it supports the ePUB ebook format (unlike other tools). What’s more, Sumatra also supports a variety of other file formats, such as PDF, MOBI, CHM, XPS, DjVu, CBZ and CBR. This is fantastic if you like to consume ebooks and other digital publications.

The Sumatra app.

Being a simple application, the user interface itself is pretty minimal. What’s more, Sumatra does lack some advanced features. Bookmarks, highlights, and other typical features aren’t in the box. Even so, Sumatra is a great choice as a capable and lightweight application that just works.

Favorite Book Reader (iOS, Android, Onyx)

The Favorite Book Reader (FBReader) is a free app that used to be open source. As such, it used to be available for a multitude of devices but now caters to iOS and Android users. There’s also a beta version in development for the Onyx reader.

The FBReader app.

FBReader supports many different file formats, such as ePUB, MOBI, fb2, and more standard text-based formats. It appears to be one of the few apps that allows you to import HTML.

In its default setting, FBReader appears as though you’re paging through a physical book. It helps to better connect you to the book than some other apps. We also like the robust library management on offer.

Freda is one of my most favorite Epub readers for Windows just because of its looks. The app looks like a native Windows 10 app and makes Epubs really stand out when you read them on it. One of my favorite features of this app is its theming capabilities which allow users to customize the look and feel of the app to make it exactly how they like it.

3. Freda

Apart from supporting Epub, the app also supports a ton of other formats including Mobi, FB2, HTML, and TXT. The app also gives you access to more than 50,000 public domain classic books free of charge from Feedbooks, Gutenberg, and other online catalogs. If looks matter to you, do give Freda a try.

Supported Platforms: Windows 11 (likely), Windows 10, Windows 8.1 (ARM, x86, x64)

What we like:

  • Good reading experience with modern UI
  • Text to speech reading support
  • Support for annotations and bookmarks
  • Fully customizable reading mode

What we don’t like:

  • Sometimes the app lags
  • Doesn’t support older Windows operating systems

 Icecream Epub Reader

Icecream apps is an app studio which has developed some really fine apps for Windows PC and of all the apps that come from the studio, their Epub reader is my favorite. Not only their Epub reader looks good but it also brings a ton of features including full-screen mode support, exceptional search capabilities, easy page turning mechanics, reading progress tracking, support for multiple languages, and more.

Apart from all the above features, I also love the fact that the reader not only supports Epub format but also other major ebook formats including Mobi, FB2, and, more.

4. Icecream Epub Reader

What we like:

  • Supports multiple file formats and languages
  • Supports bookmarks and annotations
  • Make search on Google and Wikipedia for selected text
  • Good search feature

  • All the good features are behind paywall
  • Too frequent upgrade to pro notification

Cover is primarily an app made for reading comic books on your Windows PC, but since the app also supports Epub format, it has made its way on the list. The main reason why Cover is on the list is that since the app is made for comics, it is great for reading books that are image-heavy.

5. Cover

While all the other apps on the list can handle images, they can’t do it as well as Cover can. So, if you are into books that feature a ton of images, Cover will be good for you. On the other hand, if you are into comics and manga, there is no better app that you can get.

Supported Platforms: Windows 11 (likely), Windows 10, Windows 8.1 (ARM, x86, x64)

What we like:

  • Good reading experience
  • Excellent library management
  • Reading mode is fully customizable

What we don’t like:

  • Geared more towards comic book readers

What is better, a physical book or ebook?

It really depends on one’s preference. Most readers today still prefer the much more tangible experience of using physical books. On the other hand, ebooks are considerably better due to their affordability. They are eco-friendly and are powered by software that enhances the reading experience with complementary features like an in-built dictionary, dark mode, and text highlighter.

It’s no secret that ebooks have gained popularity in recent years. People like the convenience of being able to store as many books as they want on their mobile devices, so they can read them at any given time and place. But not everyone has a big budget or the skills to hire ebook software technical support when they need help setting up their ebook applications.

Best ebook software for windows review gives you a chance to know more about ebook software. There are so many different kind of ebooks available. Some examples are audio books, text books, song books, picture books that are widely used by many people worldwide.
